Art expressing religious principle, Optical Awakening presents the essence of the truth through art

노자 도덕경 첫머리 ‘도가도비상도(道可道非常道)’는 ‘진리(도)’란 말로 표현되거나 설명할 수 있는 것이 아님을 나타낸 유명한 구절이다.

 

“Dogado Bisangdo (Korean pronunciation for “道可道非常道”)” is the famous first line from the Tao Te Ching written by Lao-tzu, and it means that the “truth (the Way)” cannot be expressed or explained in words.

 

 

이처럼 논리와 철학, 사고와 이해를 초월해 언어를 넘어 시각을 통해 진리의 본질을 나타낸 새로운 방식의 미술인 '시각견성'이 새로운 종교 미술로 소개되었다.

 

As such, there is a new way of conveying the essence of the truth through art: visualization of Truth beyond logic and philosophy, transcending linguistic understanding and thinking mind, and it is none other than Optical Awakening, a priori intuition expressed in art form, introduced as a new type of religious art.

 

 

'시각견성'은 참된 자신의 발견과 각성의 순간들, 의식상승의 과정, 순수의식의 상태에서 형상 너머로 발견하고 본 것 등 말로 표현할 수 없는 것들을 그대로 미술에 표현해 관객이 그 깨어남의 과정을 그대로 느끼고 알 수 있게 하기 위한 '깨달음과 깨어남'을 시각화해 미술로 표현한 작품들이다.

 

Optical Awakening consists of artworks that depict things that cannot be expressed in words, such as the moment of awakening, the discovery of one’s true self, the rise in the state of one’s consciousness, and the enlightening of pure consciousness- the artworks visualize enlightenment and awakening so that the viewers can intuitively understand the inexplicable process of awakening.

 

 

관람객들은 관람하고 감상하는 과정을 통해 관람하고 감상하는 과정을 통해 사고하는 마음에서 벗어나 깨달음을 접할 수 있는 새로운 방식의 진리체험을 할 수 있다.

 

Through the process of viewing these spiritual artworks, the viewers can intuitively get a glimpse of enlightenment, while deviating from the mindset of thinking and reasoning.

 

 

이것은 역사적 사실의 기록이나 신화의 기록을 아름답게 미화한 예술적 묘사였던 기존의 종교미술과는 다르게 미술 작품이 직접적인 깨달음의 표현이자 깨어남의 촉매제로 작용한다는 점에서 종교미술의 진화라고 볼 수 있다.

 

It could be described as an evolution of religious art in a sense that the artworks are a direct expression of enlightenment and act as a catalyst for awakening, whereas the conventional religious artworks were mainly the aesthetic expressions of historical records and traditional faith.

Completing Rodin’s incomplete masterpiece la Porte de I'Enfer (the Gates of Hell)

 

 

시각견성의 첫 번째 작품으로 소개된 대표작 '더 게이트'는 조각의 아버지 로댕의 '지옥의 문'을 재해석한 작품이다. '지옥의 문'은 로댕이 20년 동안이나 완성하지 못한 채 결국은 미완작품으로 남은 것으로 유명하다.

 

The Gates, which has been introduced as the first artwork from the Optical Awakening series, is a reinterpretation of The Gates of Hell by Rodin, called the Father of Sculpture. The Gates of Hell is famous as an unfinished masterpiece of Rodin, who worked on it for 20 years but ultimately was unable to complete it.

 

 

'문'의 목적은 그것을 열고 들어가 목적지에 도달하기 위한 것이다. 그렇기에 문의 완성은 열고 들어갈 곳을 발견하는 것이라고 생각한 작가는 로댕의 지옥의 문을 묵상하며 지옥의 문에 표현된 단테의 신곡, 연옥의 조각상들이 아니라 그 안에서 발견한 '문' 자체만을 재해석해 천국의 문을 창조했다. ‘지옥의 문’은 신의 형벌이며 끝없는 고통을 상징하지만 문의 반대편에서는 지옥에서 벗어날 수 있다면 거기가 바로 천국이며, 바로 그 문이 지옥의 문인 동시에 천국의 문일수도 있는 천국과 지옥의 양면성을 재해석해 신앙과 철학에 대한 본질적 화두를 제시한다.

 

The artist contemplated on Rodin’s The Gates of Hell, and reinterpreted solely the “gates,” rather than the depictions of the scene from Dante Alighieri's Inferno. According to the artist, the purpose of the Gates is to enter through them to reach a destination and hence, discovering the destination would be a prerequisite for the completion of the Gates.

The Gates symbolizes the punishment of God and the beginning of indefinite suffering (the Western religious definition for Hell) on the one side, at the same time symbolizing the end of suffering (the Buddah’s definition of the ultimate awakening, the Nirvana) from the other side, meaning that the Gates of Hell could be the Gates of Heaven(Nirvana) at the same time.

Based on his reinterpretation of the dual nature of the gates of Heaven and Hell, the Gates poses a critical religious and philosophical question regarding the true meaning of Heaven and Hell.

 

 

작가가 재정립한 '더 게이트'는 자신을 비추는 거울이다. 지옥의 면은 상처받고 퇴색돼서 손상된 녹슨 거울이 관람객을 비추고, 천국의 면은 맑고 깨끗한 면이 관람객을 비추도록 만들었다. 둘 중 어느 면에 서서 자신과 세상을 비출지는 본인이 결정하는 것이며 그것이 바로 신의 선물이고 은총이며 그 어떤 누구도 빼앗아 갈 수 없는 자유의지의 실체라고 말한다.

 

The “Gates,” redefined by the artist, is a mirror that reflects the perceiver. The side facing Hell has a rusty mirror, which has become damaged and discolored, whereas the side facing Heaven has a clean and clear mirror reflecting its pure state. It is up to the audiences to decide on which side they want to stand to see the reflections of the world including themselves. The artist goes on suggesting that this privilege to choose one’s own state of presence is a true gift or so-called ‘bless of God’ and the essence of free will that cannot be taken away by anyone.

 

 

작가는 천국이나 지옥은 장소나 공간을 이야기하는 것이 아니라 내면의 상태이자 의식의 차원이며, 자신이 마주한 그 문에 무엇을 비추고, 문을 열고 어디로 나갈지는 지금 이 순간 자신의 의지와 의식의 상태에 달려있다는 것을 작품 '더 게이트'를 통해 표현하고 있다.

 

The artist shows that Heaven and Hell do not refer to a certain place or space, but they are actually one’s inner state of consciousness. The question of what to have reflected on the gates and which side of the gates to open depends on an individual’s own consciousness.

 

 

작가는 소년시절 전국미술대회 대상 특전으로 미국 유학을 시작해 10대 때 한국과 일본에서 두 차례 초대 개인전을 가진 후 영국 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 정치 경제 철학을 전공한 특이한 경력의 아티스트다. 트랜스 아티스트란 익명으로 활동중인 그는 젊은 시절 경험한 지옥 같았던 현실과 죽음을 마주했던 절체절명의 순간에 깨달은 바를 자신의 작품에 투영해 지옥의 문이 가진 단순하면서도 심오한 의미와 그 안에 내재된 신성한 진리를 표현했다.

 

The artist behind The Gates studied abroad as the winner of the grand prize at a national art competition, and held 2 solo exhibitions in Seoul Korea and Tokyo Japan when he was attending high school in the U.S. Afterwards, he studied PPE (Politics, Philosophy and Economics) at Oxford University in England, and built his impressive career in a diplomatic and economic sector. Following his early retirement, he returned to art, and began his activity as a faceless artist. Through The Gates released under the pseudonym, Trans-Artist, he projected what he had realized during a critical point in his life when he was faced with a suicidal experience with the unavoidable quagmire in his younger years, and embodied the simple yet profound truth conveyed by The Gates of Hell.

 

 

본인의 경험을 바탕으로 작가는 자신 앞에 펼쳐진 모든 것은 자신을 비추는 거울이며 절대로 받아들일 수 없는 현실 앞에서도 원망하거나 절망하고 포기하는 대신 불가피한 삶의 그러함을 자발적 순응으로 온전히 받아들일 때 지옥 같은 현실로 향하는 문은 상처받은 에고를 다 내려놓은 자리에서도 빛나는 자신의 참된 본성을 만날 수 있는 게이트가 된다고 작품을 통해 보여주고 있다.

 

Based on his personal experience, the artist shows that the perceived reality is a mirror that reflects your state of presence, and suggests that it is when you voluntarily accept the unacceptable aspects of life, instead of falling into despair and giving up in the face of unavoidable reality, that the gates toward hellish reality will turn into gates through which you can discover your true nature, that can help you to shine even when you let go of your scarred ego.

 

 

한편 시각견성을 진리교재로 채택해 대중들에게 소개한 한얼정신문화예술원은 홍익인간 정신과 한얼사상을 계몽주의 초월철학으로 계승해 ‘모든 존재를 널리 이롭게 하리라'는 근본가치를 바탕으로 인류의식진화에 새로운 화두를 제시하고 있는 한얼교의 정신문화 혁신 프로젝트다.

 

Meanwhile, the Hanol Spiritual & Cultural Center of Art, which has adopted Optical Awakening as the means to reveal the Hanol spirit, the transcendental philosophy based on the national founding principle of “unification to benefit all beings widely,” has undertaken a spiritual and cultural movement project to endorse an evolution of the spiritual culture and human consciousness.

 

 

'시각견성' 작품은 한얼교의 전국 주요 교당인 대구, 부산, 서울, 한얼온궁에서 일부 전시되며 매주 시각견성 작품 강좌가 진행된다. 이 외에도 시각견성 모바일 갤러리(hanol.org and Transart.co)를 통해 언제든지 관람하고 체험할 수 있도록 작품 해설 강좌와 관련 자료를 제공하고 있다.

 

Some of the artworks from Optical Awakening are on display in the major halls of Hanol-Temple in Daegu, Busan and Seoul as well as at Hanol Holy Alter at Kangwha Island, and a lecture on the artworks is given on a weekly basis. There are also explanatory lectures and materials offered through a mobile gallery(hanol.org and Transart.co), where people can view and experience the Optical Awakening artworks anytime.

 

 

 

자신의 종교와는 무관하게 편안하고 친근하게 진리를 접할 수 있고, 경험할 수 있는 시각견성이 실질적 깨어남의 촉매제로서 많은 사람들에게 전해질 수 있기를 기대해 본다.
