테슬라와 스페이스 X의 회장이면서 아이언맨의 모델로도 유명한 '엘런 머스크'가 최근 뇌에 칩을 이식해 두뇌의 능력을 극대화하거나 컴퓨터 시스템과의 연결을 통한 정신의 불사를 연구하고 있다는 소식에 이목이 집중되었다.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and Space X, who is famous as the inspiration behind Iron Man, has recently come into the spotlight with the news that he is carrying out research on maximizing brain capacity with a chip implanted in the brain and searching for a solution to attain mental immortality through a connection with a computer system.

이처럼 인간의 정신세계마저 과학적 접근을 통해 특이점을 바라보면서 지금까지 인류의 정신세계를 주도해 온 종교의 역할은 어떻게 변해갈지 의문이 생긴다. 이에 철학과 논리, 구도와 수행이 아닌 미술을 감상하는 것만으로 진리를 체험할 수 있는 정신과 미술이 결합된 새로운 방식의 종교예술이자 정신문화 '시각견성'이 종교 문화에 혁신적인 패러다임을 제시했다.

In the face of not just a technological singularity but also the mental or spiritual singularity, the important question arises such as “how the role of religion, which has been providing guidance for the mind and spirit until now, will change?”. In relation to this issue, an unprecedented and innovative paradigm in religious culture has been introduced by Optical Awakening, a new type of spiritual art and religious movement that combines the elements of art with the spirituality. It is spiritual art without religious obligation through which people can experience a glimpse of enlightenment just by appreciating the artworks, instead of studying religious philosophy or metaphysics, or becoming a spiritual seeker.

'시각견성'의 작가는 소년시절 전국미술대회 대상 특전으로 미국 유학을 시작해 10대 때 한국과 일본에서 두 차례 초대 개인전을 가진 후 영국 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 정치 경제 철학을 전공한 특이한 경력의 아티스트다. '트랜스 아티스트'라는 익명으로 활동 중인 그는 지난해 미각과 미술의 결합, 테이스팅 아트 전시회를 개최하며 미각미술 작품집 <맛으로 견성>을 출판하기도 했다.

The artist of Optical Awakening has a unique background. He was famous as a young prodigious painter and won the grand prize at a national art competition with a privilege to study abroad in the U.S. as a special prize. He then held solo exhibitions in both Seoul, Korea and Tokyo, Japan. However, after leaving the States, he studied at Oxford University majoring in Politics, Philosophy and Economics, and served at diplomatic and economic occupation. After the early retirement from his career, he returned to his art. Under the pseudonym, Trans-Artist, he held an extraordinary exhibition of tasting art, which incorporates art and the sense of taste, and published a tasting art book entitled Taste of Awakening last year.

Transforming Rodin’s la Porte de I'Enfer (the Gates of Hell) into a doorway to Heaven

시각견성의 대표작으로 소개된 '더 게이트'는 어거스트 로댕의 미완 조각 걸작인 ‘지옥의 문’을 재해석하여 천국의 입구로 완성한 조각미술이다.

작가는 로댕의 지옥의 문에 표현된 단테의 신곡, 연옥의 조각상들이 아니라 '문' 자체만을 집중적으로 재해석해 천국의 문으로 완공하였다. 그가 지옥의 문을 오랜 시간 성찰하고 묵상한 후 재정립한 '더 게이트'는 지옥의 문인 동시에 자신을 비추는 거울이고 천국의 입구다.

The Gates, which have been introduced as the signature artwork of Optical Awakening, is an artwork depicting the Gates of Nirvana(Heaven) inspired by The Gates of Hell, an unfinished masterpiece by Auguste Rodin. He reinterpreted only the “gates” of The Gates of Hell, rather than the depictions of the scene from Dante Alighieri's Inferno, and re-established the gates of Hell as simply The Gates. After contemplating on The Gates of Hell, the incomplete masterpiece of Rodin, for a long period of time, he completed The Gates, which are the gates to Hell and at the same time a mirror that reflects one’s self and the gates to Nirvana.

‘지옥의 문’은 신의 형벌이자 끝없는 고통을 상징하지만 문의 반대편에서는 지옥에서 벗어날 수 있다면 거기가 바로 천국이며, 바로 그 지옥의 문인 동시에 천국의 문일수도 있다는 천국과 지옥의 양면성을 재해석해 신앙과 철학에 대한 본질적 화두를 제시한다.

The artist reinterprets the dual nature of Heaven and Hell and raises a fundamental question of religious philosophy by establishing his artwork, the Gates. While Hell means the beginning of indefinite suffering punished by God in Western understanding of the terminology, according to Eastern religious tradition, Buddhist definition of Nirvana (the absolute transcendence or the ultimate awakening) refers to the end of suffering. While the Gates of Hell symbolizes an endless pain and suffering as well as punishment from God on the one side, it could also symbolize the end of pain and suffering on the other side of the Gates. If one can extricate oneself from the hell through that gates, it would be the gates to Nirvana, meaning that the Gates of Hell could be the Gates of Nirvana at the same time, depending on which side of the gate the one is standing on.

작가는 젊은 시절 경험한 지옥 같았던 현실과 죽음을 마주했던 절체절명의 순간에 깨달은 바를 자신의 작품에 투영해 지옥의 문이 가진 단순하면서도 심오한 의미와 그 안에 내재된 신성한 진리를 표현했다. 작가는 눈앞에 펼쳐진 현실과 세상은 자신을 비추는 거울이며 절대로 받아들일 수 없는 현실 앞에서도 절망하고 포기하는 대신 불가피한 삶의 그러함을 자발적 순응으로 온전히 받아들일 때 지옥 같은 현실로 향하는 문은 상처받은 에고를 다 내려놓은 자리에서도 빛나는 자신의 참된 본성을 만날 수 있는 게이트가 된다고 작품을 통해 보여준다.

The artist projected what he had realized from the unexecuted attempt to commit suicide when he had to face the unbearable reality after passing of his father during his younger years, and expressed the simple but profound truth in his artwork, The Gates. The artist shows that the suchness of life and the perceived reality is a mirror that reflects you, and it is when you unconditionally surrender and accept the unbearable aspects of life, instead of falling into despair or resentment and giving up in the face of unacceptable reality, that the gates toward hellish reality will reveal its true purpose and turn into the gates through which you can discover your true nature, that will still shine even when you let go of your devastated ego.

'더 게이트'는 지옥의 면과 그 반대편의 천국의 면으로 이루어져 있는데 지옥의 면은 상처받고 퇴색돼서 손상된 녹슨 거울이 관람객을 비추고, 천국의 면은 맑고 깨끗한 면이 관람객을 비추도록 만들었다. 둘 중 어느 면에 서서 자신과 세상을 비출지는 본인이 결정하는 것이며 그것이 바로 신의 선물이고 은총이며 그 어떤 누구도 빼앗아 갈 수 없는 자유의지의 실체라고 말한다.

The Gates face Hell on one side and Heaven on the other. It was made so that a rusty mirror, which has become damaged and discolored, reflects the audience on the side toward Hell, and a clean and clear mirror reflecting the audience on the side toward Heaven. It means that it is up to the audience to decide on which side to stand to see the reflections of oneself and the world, and this free choice is a holy gift and bless of God, at the same time the essence of free will that cannot be taken away from you in any situation.

작가는 천국이나 지옥은 장소나 공간을 이야기하는 것이 아니라 내면의 상태이자 의식의 차원이며, 자신이 마주한 그 문에 무엇을 비추고, 문을 열고 어디로 나갈지는 지금 이 순간 자신의 의지와 의식의 상태에 달려있다는 것을 작품 '더 게이트'를 통해 표현하고 있다.

The artist shows that Heaven and Hell do not refer to a certain outer location or external condition, but they are actually one’s inner state of consciousness. The question of what to have reflected on the gates and which side of the gates to open depends on the individual’s own volition and the state of consciousness.

한편 시각견성을 진리교재로 채택해 대중들에게 소개한 한얼정신문화예술원은 홍익인간 정신과 한얼사상을 계몽주의 초월철학으로 계승해 '모든 존재를 널리 이롭게 하리라'는 근본가치를 바탕으로 인류의식진화에 새로운 화두를 제시하고 있는 한얼교의 정신문화 혁신 프로젝트다.

Meanwhile, the Hanol Spiritual & Cultural Center of Art, which has adopted Optical Awakening as the means to reveal the Hanol spirit and its philosophy, which is based on the national founding principle to “unite and benefit all beings widely,” has undertaken a spiritual and cultural movement project to endorse an evolution of the spiritual culture and human consciousness.

모든 성현들의 가르침과 타 종교의 신앙방식을 존중하며 각자의 신앙방식으로 진리를 실천하기를 독려하는 한얼교는 종교적 신앙과 관계없이 한얼교인이 아니어도 자유롭게 한얼의 진리와 철학을 접하고 경험할 수 있도록 한얼정신 문화예술을 소개했다.

Hanol-gyo is unconventional religion as it encourages other religion and respect their way of pursuing Truth. It is due to its founding principle that regards all the proper religion having the same root and the same destination, the Truth. Hanol-gyo has introduced Hanol spiritual and cultural movement of art for non-believers and the believers of other religion to experience the philosophy of Hanol, without any religious activity.

Hanol spiritual and cultural movement of art refers to a spiritual reflection of Hanol Philosophy in Art that introduces a new direction for the evolution of the spiritual culture and religious innovation that transcend customs and formalities. It is a new type of evolved spiritual art and religious culture through which anyone can experience Enlightenment and Awakening through art, without religious obligation. Through Optical Awakening, Hanol-gyo is presenting a new possibility to religious innovation and artistic evolution by expanding the religious boundary in a wider perspective.
