보고 깨닫는 미술 시각견성, 재해석된 로뎅의 미완 걸작 ‘지옥의 문’

지난해 미각과 미술을 결합한 먹는 미술인 ‘미각미술’ 전시회와 작품 소개서 ‘맛으로 견성’을 발표했던 익명의 작가 트랜스 아티스트가 이번에는 정신과 미술을 결합한 ‘시각견성’을 소개했다.

Trans-Artist, a faceless artist who held a sensational Tasting Art exhibition last year called Taste of Enlightenment, and published Taste of Awakening, has recently introduced Optical Awakening, which combines the elements of art and the spiritual meditation.

작가는 소년시절 전국미술대회 대상 특전으로 미국 유학을 시작해 10대 때 한국과 일본에서 두 차례 초대 개인전을 가진 후 영국 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 정치 경제 철학을 전공한 특이한 경력의 아티스트다.

The artist has unique career. He studied abroad in the U.S. as the grand prize of winning at a national art competition for youth, and held solo exhibitions in Seoul Korea and Tokyo Japan. Afterwards, he studied PPE (Politics, Philosophy and Economics) at Oxford University in England, and built his successful career in the diplomatic and economic sector. After the early retirement, he returned to his art and introduced a new form of art called Trans-Art since 2012.

‘보고서 깨우치는 미술’이라 표현할 수 있는 시각견성은 깨달음과 깨어남의 과정을 시각화 한 미술작품이다. 언어로 표현할 수 없는 것들을 미술로 표현해 진리의 본질을 감상하는 것이고, 이로 인해 마음의 작용에서 벗어나 직관적으로 깨달음을 접할 수 있게 하는 작품이라는 설명이다.

Optical Awakening, which could be described as a form of “art to provide an indirect experience of spiritual enlightenment and awakening,” visualizes the process of elevation in consciousness. The artworks depict the things that cannot accurately be explained by language. It is to appreciate the essence of the truths in art form, through which the viewers can intuitively experience a glimpse of enlightenment, without depending on the logic of thinking mind. It is to transcend mind activity and experience the intuitive truth known by pure consciousness, your true nature.

트랜스 아티스트의 ‘더 게이트’는 시각견성 대표작으로, 어거스트 로댕의 미완 조각 걸작인 '지옥의 문'에 표현된 단테의 신곡, 연옥의 조각상들이 아니라 ‘문’ 자체만을 재해석하여 천국의 입구로 완성한 조각미술이다.

그가 지옥의 문을 오랜 시간 성찰하고 묵상한 후 재정립한 ‘더 게이트’는 지옥의 문인 동시에 자신을 비추는 거울이고 천국의 입구다.

‘지옥의 문’은 끝없는 고통을 상징하지만 문의 반대편에서는 지옥에서 벗어날 수 있다면 거기가 바로 천국이며, 바로 그 문이 천국의 문일수도 있는 천국과 지옥의 양면성을 재해석해 신앙과 철학에 대한 본질적 화두를 제시한다.

After contemplating on The Gates of Hell for a long time, he created The Gates, which are the gates to Hell and at the same time a mirror that reflects one’s self and the gates to Heaven.

While The Gates of Hell symbolize endless pain and suffering as well as punishment from God on the one hand, it suggests that it could symbolize the end of pain on the other side. If one could get out of the hell through that gates, it would be the gates to Heaven, meaning that the Gates of Hell could be the Gates of Heaven at the same time, depending on which side of the gates that one is standing on. The artist reinterprets the dual nature of the gates and the hidden significance of Heaven and Hell, and raises a fundamental question of religious philosophy through the Gates.

그는 젊은 시절 자신이 처했던 지옥 같았던 현실과 죽음을 마주했던 경험, 그 절체절명의 순간에 깨달은 바를 자신의 작품에 투영해 지옥의 문이 가진 단순하면서도 심오한 의미와 그 안에 내재된 신성한 진리를 표현했다.

He expressed the simple yet profound and the divine truth that he had realized during a critical point in his younger years, when he was faced with hell-like reality and experienced the moment of awakening at the moment of suicide attempt.

작가는 눈앞에 펼쳐진 현실 ‘타타타-부처가 말한 삶의 그러함’과 세상은 자신을 비추는 거울이며 절대로 받아들일 수 없는 현실 앞에서도 절망하고 포기하는 대신 불가피한 삶의 그러함을 자발적 순응으로 온전히 받아들일 때 지옥 같은 현실로 향하는 문은 상처받은 에고를 다 내려놓은 자리에서도 빛나는 자신의 참된 본성을 만날 수 있는 게이트가 된다고 작품을 통해 보여준다.

By using a mirror as the medium to complete The Gates, the artist shows that TATATA ‘the Buddhist term for the suchness of life’ and the perceiving reality is a mirror that reflects you, and it is when you voluntarily accept the unacceptable aspects of life, instead of falling into despair or resentment, cursing or giving up in the face of unavoidable reality, that the gates toward hellish reality will turn into the gates through which you can discover your immutable nature, that will shine even when you let go of your contaminated ego.

‘더 게이트’는 지옥의 면과 그 반대편의 천국의 면으로 이루어져 있는데 지옥의 면은 상처받고 퇴색돼서 손상된 녹슨 거울이 관람객을 비추고, 천국의 면은 맑고 깨끗한 면이 관람객을 비추도록 만들었다. 둘 중 어느 면에 서서 자신과 세상을 비출지는 본인이 결정하는 것이며 그것이 바로 신의 선물이고 은총이며 그 어떤 누구도 빼앗아 갈 수 없는 자유의지의 실체라고 말한다.

The Gates face Hell on one side and Heaven on the other. It was made so that a rusty mirror, which has become damaged and discolored, reflects the viewers on the side toward Hell, and a clear and pure state mirror reflecting the viewers on the side toward Heaven. It has been explained that it is up to the perceivers to decide on which side they want to stand to see the reflections of themselves and the world. The artist suggests that it is a God given present and blessing from God to freely decide your own state of presence, and it is the essence of free will that cannot be taken away from you.

작가는 천국이나 지옥은 장소나 공간을 이야기하는 것이 아니라 내면의 상태이자 의식의 차원이며, 자신이 마주한 그 문에 무엇을 비추고, 문을 열고 어디로 나갈지는 지금 이 순간 자신의 의지와 의식의 상태에 달려있다는 것을 작품 ‘더 게이트’를 통해 표현하고 있다.

The artist tells by his artwork that Heaven and Hell do not refer to a certain location or place, but they are actually one’s inner state of presence and a dimension of consciousness. The question of what to have reflected on the gates and which side of the gates to open depends on the individual’s own free will and the state of presence.

한편, 시각견성은 홍익인간 정신과 한얼사상을 계몽주의 초월철학으로 계승해 재정립한 한얼교의 정신문화 혁신 프로젝트의 진리교재로 사용되고 있다. 한얼교는 누구든지 자신의 종교적 신앙과 관계없이 자유롭게 진리를 경험할 수 있도록 ‘시각견성’을 진리교재로 채택해 한얼정신 문화예술을 소개하며 진화하는 종교와 미술의 새로운 패러다임과 특이점을 맞이하는 정신문화의 혁신적 도약의 가능성을 소개했다.

Meanwhile, Optical Awakening is used as learning device for the Spiritual and Cultural Movement Project of Hanol-gyo, the religious re-establishment of national founding principle of Korea. Hanol-gyo has adopted Optical Awakening as teaching material and learning device of Hanol philosophy to introduce the Hanol spirit, Hanol culture and Hanol art so that anyone can experience the Hanol philosophy freely, irrespective of their religious faiths. The Hanol spiritual movement of Art, the religious movement without religious obligation through art, presents a new paradigm for spiritual evolution and a new possibility of achieving revolutionary leap in the religious culture in the face of a spiritual singularity.
