유구한 종교의 역사만큼이나 종교미술의 역사 또한 깊다. 기존의 성서적 기록이나 불교의 탱화와 같은 회화와 조각, 묘사로서의 종교 미술에서 진화한 새로운 형태의 종교 미술이 소개되었다. 진리를 표현하거나 설명할 때 부득이하게 존재하는 언어적 모순과 사상적 대립, 갈등을 해소하는 방법으로 진리와 예술이 결합된 새로운 종교미술이 탄생한 것이다.

 

The history of religious art is just as long as that of religious records. A new form of religious art has emerged from the traditional form of illustrative religious art such as conventional scriptures, paintings, and so on. It marks the birth of a new religious art that combines the truths and artistic elements in order to eliminate the linguistic contradictions and conflict in understanding metaphysical principles. It helps to avoid the misunderstandings that inevitably exist when explaining or expressing the truths.

 

 

최근 새로운 종교 미술로 등장한 '시각견성'은 깨달음과 깨어남의 과정을 시각화 한 미술이다. '시각견성'이라는 이름 그대로 해당 작품들은 진리를 미술로 감상하여 ‘보고서 깨치는 미술’을 선보인다.

'시각견성'에서 의미하는 견성이란 ‘본성의 발견’으로, 본성을 찾아가는 깨어남과 깨달음의 과정을 미술로 표현해 관람객이 깨달음의 과정을 간접 체험할 수 있다.

 

Optical Awakening, which has recently emerged as a new type of religious art, visualizes the process of awakening and enlightenment. Befitting its name, Optical Awakening presents a form of “art viewed to experience a glimpse of enlightenment”.

According to optical awakening, the word, “Awakening,” means simply the “discovery of true nature,” and the art provides the indirect experience of the awakening in consciousness or the preview of spiritual enlightenment through art.

 

 

'시각견성'의 작가는 소년시절 전국미술대회 대상 특전으로 미국 유학을 시작해 10대 때 한국과 일본에서 두 차례 초대 개인전을 가진 후 영국 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 정치 경제 철학을 전공한 특이한 경력의 아티스트다. '트랜스 아티스트'라는 익명으로 활동 중인 그는 지난해 미각과 미술의 결합, 테이스팅 아트 전시회를 개최하며 미각미술 작품집 <맛으로 견성>을 출판하기도 했다.

 

The artist behind Optical Awakening has a unique background. He was famous as a prodigious young painter who won the grand prize at the 28th Korean national art competition for youth, with a privilege to study abroad in the U.S. with scholarship. He then held two solo exhibitions both in Seoul, Korea and Tokyo, Japan. However, for an unknown reason, he gave up art and studied at Oxford University majoring in Politics, Philosophy and Economics, and built his impressive career at diplomatic and economic occupation. After the early retirement form his successful career, he returned to his art. He worked as a faceless artist under the pseudonym, Trans-Artist. He held an astounding exhibition of tasting-art, which incorporates art and the sense of taste, providing once in a life time chance for an audience to experience the moment of awakening by extraordinary tasting exhibition, and published a tasting art book entitled Tasting Awakening last year.

시각견성 대표작으로 소개된 '더 게이트'는 어거스트 로댕의 미완 조각 걸작인 ‘지옥의 문’을 재해석해 천국의 입구로 재완성한 작품이다.

 

The Gates, which have been introduced as a major work of Optical Awakening, is a special mirror depicting the Gates of Heaven inspired by The Gates of Hell, an unfinished masterpiece sculpture by Auguste Rodin.

 

 

‘지옥의 문’은 끝없는 고통을 상징하지만 문의 반대편에서는 지옥에서 벗어날 수 있다면 거기가 바로 천국이며, 바로 그 문이 지옥의 문인 동시에 천국의 문일 수도 있다는 천국과 지옥의 양면성을 재해석해 신앙과 철학에 대한 본질적 화두를 제시한다.

 

While The Gates of Hell symbolizes indefinite suffering as well as punishment from God on the one side, it suggests that it could symbolize the end of suffering from the other side. If one could get out of the hell through that gate, it would be the gate to Heaven, the end of suffering. It means that the Gates of Hell could be the Gates of Heaven at the same time, depending on which side of the gate that the one is standing on. The artist reinterprets the dual nature of the gates of Heaven and Hell and raises the ontological question through the Gate.

 

 

작가는 로댕의 지옥의 문에 표현된 단테의 신곡, 연옥의 조각상들이 아니라 ‘문’ 자체만을 집중적으로 재해석해 천국의 문으로 완공하였다. 그가 지옥의 문을 오랜 시간 성찰하고 묵상한 후 재정립한 '더 게이트'는 지옥의 문인 동시에 자신을 비추는 거울이고 천국의 입구다.

 

The artist solely reinterpreted the “gates,” instead of the entire scene from Dante Alighieri's Inferno depicted in the sculpture by Rodin, and completed it as the Gates of Heaven. The artist meditated on The Gates of Hell extensively before he created the Gates, which is the gates of hell and at the same time, the gates of Heaven that reflects the perceiver’s inner state as a mirror.

 

 

작가는 젊은 시절 자신이 경험한 지옥 같았던 현실과 죽음을 마주했던 절체절명의 순간에 깨달은 바를 작품에 투영해 지옥의 문이 가진 단순하면서도 심오한 의미와 그 안에 내재된 신성한 진리를 표현했다. 그는 눈앞에 펼쳐진 모든 것은 자신을 비추는 거울이며 절대로 받아들일 수 없는 현실 앞에서도 원망과 절망 대신 불가피한 삶의 그러함을 자발적 순응으로 온전히 받아들일 때 상처받은 에고를 다 내려놓은 자리에서도 빛나는 자신의 참된 본성을 만날 수 있는 게이트가 된다고 작품을 통해 보여준다.

 

The artist projected what he had realized from the experience of returning from the suicidal death during a critical point in his early life when his father died and he was left with unbearable reality and indefinite suffering. He embodied the simple yet profound understanding and divine truth conveyed by The Gates of Hell. The artist shows that the suchness of life and perceived reality is a mirror that reflects you, and it is when you unconditionally surrender to suchness of life and accept unacceptable life, instead of falling into resentment and giving up in the face of unacceptable reality, that the gates of hell toward unacceptable reality will show its true face and turn into the gates through which you can discover your ‘true nature’ and ‘inexplicable peace’. They are one and the same immutable essence, which will shine even when you let go of your wounded ego.

 

 

'더 게이트'는 지옥의 면과 그 반대편의 천국의 면으로 이루어져 있는데 지옥의 면은 상처받고 퇴색돼서 손상된 녹슨 거울이 관람객을 비추고, 천국의 면은 맑고 깨끗한 면이 관람객을 비추도록 만들었다. 둘 중 어느 면에 서서 자신과 세상을 비출지는 본인이 결정하는 것이며 그것이 바로 신의 선물이고 은총이며 그 어떤 누구도 빼앗아 갈 수 없는 자유의지의 실체라고 말한다.

 

The Gates face Hell on one side and Heaven on the other. It was made so that a rusty mirror, which has become damaged and discolored, reflects the perceivers on the side toward Hell, and a clean and clear mirror reflecting the perceivers on the side toward Heaven. It is up to the perceivers to decide on which side they want to stand to see the reflections of themselves and the world. The artist shows through the Gates that this privilege to choose is a true gift or blessing from God, and it is the essence of free will that cannot be taken away by anyone.

 

 

작가는 천국이나 지옥은 장소나 공간을 이야기하는 것이 아니라 내면의 상태이자 의식의 차원이며, 자신이 마주한 그 문에 무엇을 비추고, 문을 열고 어디로 나갈지는 지금 이 순간 자신의 의지와 의식의 상태에 달려있다는 것을 작품 '더 게이트'를 통해 표현하고 있다.

 

The artist also shows that Heaven and Hell do not refer to a certain place or space, but they are actually one’s inner state of consciousness. The question of what to have reflected on the gates and which side of the gates to open depends on the individual’s own free will and consciousness.

 

 

한편 시각견성을 진리교재로 채택해 대중들에게 소개한 한얼정신문화예술원은 홍익인간 정신과 한얼사상을 계몽주의 초월철학으로 계승해 ‘모든 존재를 널리 이롭게 하리라'는 근본가치를 바탕으로 인류의식진화에 새로운 화두를 제시하고 있는 한얼교의 정신문화 혁신 프로젝트다.

 

Meanwhile, the Hanol Spiritual & Cultural Center of Art, which has adopted Optical Awakening as the means to reveal the Hanol spirit and its philosophy, which is based on Korean national founding principle of “unification to benefit all beings widely,” has undertaken a spiritual and cultural movement project to endorse an evolution of the spiritual culture and human consciousness.

 

 

모든 성현들의 가르침과 타 종교의 신앙방식을 존중하며 각자의 신앙방식으로 진리를 실천하기를 독려하는 한얼교는 종교적 신앙과 관계없이 한얼교인이 아니어도 자유롭게 한얼의 진리와 철학을 접하고 경험할 수 있도록 한얼정신 문화예술을 소개하고 있다.

 

Hanol-gyo is unconventional religion as it encourages other religion and respect their way of pursuing Truth. It is due to its founding principle that all the proper religion has the same root and the same destination, the Truth. Hanol-gyo has introduced Hanol spiritual and cultural movement of art for non-believers and the believers of other religion to experience the philosophy of Hanol, without any religious obligation.
