신앙과 미술의 결합으로 시작되는 새로운 정신문화 ‘시각견성’

더 게이트, 로댕의 '지옥의 문' 재해석한 조각미술 작품

AI(인공지능)을 포함한 획기적인 과학 기술의 발전과 4차 산업혁명으로 상상을 초월하는 속도로 특이점을 향해가는 격변의 시대에 새로운 정신문화의 발전방향이 정신세계와 미술세계의 결합을 통해 제시되었다.

The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0) symbolizes that the world is heading toward the singularity at a speed beyond anyone’s imagination. In an era of rapid changes and upheaval through scientific and technological breakthroughs, a new direction of spiritual and cultural development has been proposed through the merger of Art and Spirituality.

보고서 깨닫는 미술 '시각견성'은 본성을 찾아가는 깨어남과 깨달음의 과정을 미술로 표현해 보는 사람으로 하여금 그 의식각성의 과정을 간접 체험할 수 있게 표현한 작품이다.

Optical Awakening, the major artworks of Trans-Art, express the process of awakening in one’s consciousness in the form of art to allow the viewers to indirectly experience the process of awakening of one’s true nature.

이번에 시각견성의 대표작으로 소개된 '더 게이트'는 어거스트 로댕의 미완 조각 걸작인 ‘지옥의 문’을 재해석하여 천국의 입구로 완성한 조각미술이다.

The Gates, which have been introduced as an iconic artwork of Optical Awakening, is an artwork depicting the Gates of Heaven inspired by The Gates of Hell, an unfinished masterpiece sculpture by Auguste Rodin.

‘지옥의 문’은 신의 형벌이자 끝없는 고통을 상징하지만 문의 반대편에서는 지옥에서 벗어날 수 있다면 거기가 바로 천국이며, 바로 그 지옥의 문인 동시에 천국의 문일수도 있다는 천국과 지옥의 양면성을 재해석해 신앙과 철학에 대한 본질적 화두를 제시한다.

While The Gates of Hell symbolize the beginning of endless suffering as well as punishment from God on the one hand, it suggests that it could symbolize the end of suffering on the other. According to Buddha, Nirvana (the absolute transcendence or the ultimate awakening), is simply the end of suffering. Thus, if one could get out of the hell through that gate, it would be the gate to Nirvana, the Heaven without all forms of suffering. In other words, the Gates of Hell could be the Gates of Nirvana at the same time, depending on which side of the gate the one is standing on. The artist reinterprets the dual nature of Heaven and Hell and raises a fundamental question of religious philosophy through the Gate.

시각견성 작가는 소년시절 전국미술대회 대상 특전으로 미국유학을 시작했고 10대 때 한국과 일본에서 두 차례 초대 개인전을 가진 후 영국 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 정치 경제 철학을 전공한 특이한 경력의 소유자로 본명 대신 '트랜스 아티스트'란 익명으로 활동하고 있다. 지난해 미각과 미술의 결합, 테이스팅아트 전시회 개최와 미각미술 작품집 ‘맛으로 견성’을 출판하기도 했다.

The author of Optical Awakening comes from a unique background: he began his studies in the U.S. in his childhood, as a special prize for winning a national art competition in which 230,000 competitors applied for, and held two major exhibitions in Seoul and Tokyo as a genius teen artist. However, after his failure to exhibit a grand scale installation art in Seoul Namsan tower(due to city regulations) he went on studying Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) at Oxford University. After the early retirement from his successful career as a business man and a diplomat, he returned to his art as a faceless artist under the pseudonym, Trans-Artist. Last year, he held a sensational exhibition of Tasting Art, which combines art and the sense of taste, and published Taste of Awakening, a collection of tasting artworks.

작가는 로댕의 미완걸작 지옥의 문에 표현된 단테의 신곡, 연옥의 조각상들이 아니라 ‘문’ 자체만을 재해석해 천국의 문으로 완공하였다. 그가 지옥의 문을 오랜 시간 성찰하고 묵상한 후 재정립한 '더 게이트'는 지옥의 문인 동시에 자신을 비추는 거울이고 천국의 입구다.

He concentrated only on the “gates” from The Gates of Hell, rather than the whole depictions of the scene from Dante Alighieri's Inferno, and reinterpreted the Gates by completing it as the gates of Heaven. After contemplating and reflecting on The Gates of Hell for a long time, he re-established The Gates, which are the gates to Hell and at the same time a mirror that reflects one’s self and the gates to Heaven.

작가는 젊은 시절 자신이 경험한 지옥 같았던 현실과 죽음을 마주했던 절체절명의 순간에 깨달은 바를 작품에 투영해 지옥의 문이 가진 단순하면서도 심오한 의미와 그 안에 내재된 신성한 진리를 표현했다. 그는 눈앞에 펼쳐진 현실과 세상은 자신을 비추는 거울이며 절대로 받아들일 수 없는 현실 앞에서도 원망과 저주가 아니라 불가피한 삶의 그러함을 자발적 순응으로 온전히 받아들일 때 상처받은 에고를 다 내려놓은 자리에서도 빛나는 자신의 참된 본성을 만날 수 있는 게이트가 된다고 작품을 통해 보여준다.

The artist projected what he had realized during his early days when he was faced with hell (an inextricable quagmire that he thought the only way out was to commit suicide), and depicted the simple yet profound truth that he acquired from his critical experience, in his artwork. The artist expressed in his art that the suchness of life and perceiving reality is a reflection of your inner state of consciousness, and it is when you voluntarily accept the unavoidable aspects of life, instead of falling into despair or resentment and giving up in the face of unacceptable reality, that the gates toward painful reality will turn into the gates through which you can discover your true nature, that will shine even when you let go of your wounded ego.

'더 게이트'는 지옥의 면과 그 반대편의 천국의 면으로 이루어져 있는데 지옥의 면은 상처받고 퇴색돼서 손상된 녹슨 거울이 관람객을 비추고, 천국의 면은 맑고 깨끗한 면이 관람객을 비추도록 만들었다. 둘 중 어느 면에 서서 자신과 세상을 비출지는 본인이 결정하는 것이고 그것이 바로 신의 선물이자 은총이며 그 어떤 누구도 빼앗아 갈 수 없는 자유의지의 실체라고 말한다.

The Gates face Hell on one side and Heaven on the other. It was made so that a rusty mirror, which has become damaged and discolored, reflects the viewers on the side toward Hell, and a clean and clear mirror reflecting the viewers on the side toward Heaven. It has been explained that it is up to the audience to decide on which side one want to stand to see the reflections of oneself and the world, and this is a true present and bless of God, and the essence of free will that cannot be taken away in any circumstances.

작가는 천국이나 지옥은 장소나 공간을 이야기하는 것이 아니라 내면의 상태이자 의식의 차원이며, 자신이 마주한 그 문에 무엇을 비추고, 문을 열고 어디로 나갈지는 지금 이 순간 자신의 의지와 의식의 상태에 달려있다는 것을 작품 '더 게이트'를 통해 표현하고 있다.

The artist shows that Heaven and Hell do not refer to a certain location or outer condition, but they are actually one’s inner state of consciousness. The question of what to have reflected on the gates and which side of the gates to open depends on the individual’s own volition and the state of consciousness.

'시각견성'은 혁신적인 종교문화를 소개하는 한얼교의 한얼문화예술 프로젝트에 사용되는 진리 교재로, 관람자가 작품을 통해 직접 성찰하고 명상할 수 있는 화두를 제시한다. ‘더 게이트’를 포함한 시각견성 작품들은 한얼교 웹사이트와 트랜스아트 웹사이트에서 확인 가능하다.

Optical Awakening is appropriated as a teaching material and a learning device of the Hanol Spiritual and Cultural Movement of Art, the innovative cultural and spiritual revolution project of Hanol-gyo. It allows participants to experience the teachings of spiritual enlightenment through the artworks, without any religious obligations. The Gates and other artworks of Optical Awakening can be viewed on the websites of Hanol-gyo and Trans-Art.

한편, 정신과 미술의 결합 시각견성을 통해 관습과 형식을 초월해 새로운 정신문화의 진화와 혁신 방향을 소개하는 ‘한얼정신 문화예술’과 함께 기존의 교인이란 개념을 넘어서 누구나 쉽게 진리를 배우고 관람할 수 있는 영적동참자와 관람자의 개념을 소개한 한얼교는 종교미술의 진화이자 일반미술의 진화 뿐 아니라 종교진화에 새로운 화두를 제시한다.
