Optical Awakening attracts attention as an evolution of religious art

유럽 중세시대, 마녀사냥과 종교재판, 흑사병과 같은 역병의 범람, 도덕과 위생의 타락, 비상식적인 집단심리로 인해 암흑기로 표현되는 어둠의 역사는 예술과 문화의 발전에서 비롯된 르네상스에 의해 밝아지기 시작했다. 또한 어둠을 밝히는 깨어남을 의미하는 '계몽운동'은 르네상스가 원동력이 되어 아름다운 문화와 경제적 풍요를 꽃 피우며 당시 모든 분야의 획기적인 진화와 발전이 이루어졌다.

The European Middle Ages are often described as the “Dark Ages” due to an outrageous collective psychology that included witch hunts and religious trials, rampant epidemics such as the Black Death, and moral decline and sanitary issues. The darkness was lifted with the Renaissance, a period marked by an astonishing advancement of the arts and culture. Also, the Enlightenment Movement, referring to intellectual awakening from darkness, became the driving force behind the flourishing culture and revolutionary advances that were achieved in every sector such as philosophy, natural science, industry, technology, medicine and so on.

르네상스라는 문화적 특이점이 도래했던 과거와 마찬가지로 과학 기술적 특이점이라는 양자적 도약을 앞두고 있는 지금, 트랜스 르네상스시대를 꿈꾸는 새로운 방식의 종교예술이자 정신문화가 태동하고 있다.

We are now about to make a quantum leap toward a scientific and technological peak. Just as a cultural peak was reached during the Renaissance, amidst this development, there is an emergence of a new type of religious art and spiritual culture based on a vision of a Trans-Renaissance era.

정신문화에 새로운 화두를 제시하고 있는 '시각견성'은 본성을 찾아가는 깨어남과 깨달음의 과정을 시각화한 미술 작품이다. 철학과 논리, 구도와 수행이 아닌 미술을 감상하는 것만으로도 보는 사람이 의식의 각성과 그 과정을 간접 체험할 수 있는 새로운 방식의 종교예술이자 정신문화로 알려졌다.

Optical Awakening, which presents a new possibility in spiritual culture and religious development, refers to artworks that visualize the process of awakening and enlightenment, expressing the inspirations beyond a conventional understanding of human nature. It is known as a new type of religious art and spiritual culture through which people can experience the spiritual awakening process indirectly simply by appreciating the artworks, rather than becoming a spiritual seeker. i.e. it is possible to participate in religion without religious obligations.

정신과 미술의 결합인 '시각견성'은 철학과 논리, 구도와 수행이 아닌 미술을 감상하는 것만으로 진리를 체험할 수 있는 직접적인 깨달음의 표현이자 깨어남의 촉매제가 되는 종교미술로 눈길을 끈다.

Trans-Art (Optical Awakening), which combines the elements of art with spirituality, is drawing attention as evolutionary form of religious art through which people can learn the quintessence of religion without religious obligation. Participating in religion simply by appreciating the artworks, instead of studying religious philosophy or logic, or practicing asceticism, is unconventional form of religious activity.

시각견성의 대표작으로 소개된 '더 게이트'는 어거스트 로댕의 미완 조각 걸작인 ‘지옥의 문’을 재해석하여 천국의 입구로 완성한 조각미술이다.

Optical Awakening is a direct expression of enlightenment and a catalyst for awakening. The Gates, which have been introduced as an iconic artwork of Optical Awakening, is a sculpture depicting the ‘Gates of Heaven(Nirvana)’ inspired by The Gates of Hell, an unfinished masterpiece sculpture by Auguste Rodin.

‘지옥의 문’은 신의 형벌이자 끝없는 고통을 상징하지만 문의 반대편에서는 지옥에서 벗어날 수 있다면 거기가 바로 천국이며, 바로 그 지옥의 문인 동시에 천국의 문일수도 있다는 천국과 지옥의 양면성을 재해석해 신앙과 철학에 대한 본질적 화두를 제시한다.

While The Gates of Hell symbolize “endless pain and suffering as well as punishment from God” on the one hand, it suggests that it could also symbolize the “end of pain and suffering” on the other. If one could extricate himself from the hell through that gates, it would be the gates to Heaven, or the Gates of Nirvana. According to Buddha, the Nirvana (which means the ultimate transcendence, the absolute awakening) is simply the end of dukkha, the end of suffering. It means that the Gates of Hell could be the Gates of Nirvana at the same time, depending on which side of the gate the one is standing on.

The artist reinterprets the dual nature of the gates of Heaven and Hell by using the western religious understanding of hell and Eastern philosophical definition of Nirvana, and raises a fundamental question of religious philosophy through the Gates.

작가는 로댕의 미완걸작 지옥의 문에 표현된 단테의 신곡, 연옥의 조각상들이 아니라 ‘문’ 자체만을 재해석해 천국의 문으로 완공하였다. 그가 지옥의 문을 오랜 시간 성찰하고 묵상한 후 재정립한 '더 게이트'는 지옥의 문인 동시에 자신을 비추는 거울이고 천국의 입구다.

The artist solely reinterpreted the “gates,” instead of the scene from Dante Alighieri's Inferno depicted in the sculpture by Rodin, and completed it as the Gates of Heaven. The artist contemplated and reflected on The Gates of Hell extensively before he created the Gates, which is the gates of hell and at the same time, the gates of Heaven that reflects the perceiver’s inner state as a mirror.

작가는 젊은 시절 경험한 지옥 같았던 현실과 죽음을 마주했던 절체절명의 순간에 깨달은 바를 자신의 작품에 투영해 지옥의 문이 가진 단순하면서도 심오한 의미와 그 안에 내재된 신성한 진리를 표현했다. 작가는 눈앞에 펼쳐진 현실과 세상은 자신을 비추는 거울이며 절대로 받아들일 수 없는 현실 앞에서도 절망하고 포기하는 대신 불가피한 삶의 그러함을 자발적 순응으로 온전히 받아들일 때 지옥 같은 현실로 향하는 문은 상처받은 에고를 다 내려놓은 자리에서도 빛나는 자신의 참된 본성을 만날 수 있는 게이트가 된다고 작품을 통해 보여준다.

The artist projected what he had realized during a critical point in his life when he was faced with a brutal reality and a suicidal experience during his younger years, and embodied the simple yet profound and divine truth conveyed by The Gates of Hell. The artist shows that the suchness of your perceived reality is a mirror that reflects you, and it is when you voluntarily accept the unavoidable aspects of life, instead of falling into despair or resentment and giving up in the face of unacceptable reality, that the gates toward hellish reality will turn into the gates through which you can discover your true nature, that can help you to shine even when you let go of your wounded ego.

'더 게이트'는 지옥의 면과 그 반대편의 천국의 면으로 이루어져 있는데 지옥의 면은 상처받고 퇴색돼서 손상된 녹슨 거울이 관람객을 비추고, 천국의 면은 맑고 깨끗한 면이 관람객을 비추도록 만들었다. 둘 중 어느 면에 서서 자신과 세상을 비출지는 본인이 결정하는 것이며 그것이 바로 신의 선물이고 은총이며 그 어떤 누구도 빼앗아 갈 수 없는 자유의지의 실체라고 말한다.

The Gates face Hell on one side and Heaven on the other. It was made so that a rusty mirror, which has become damaged and discolored, reflects the viewers on the side toward Hell, and a clean and clear mirror reflecting the viewers on the side toward Heaven. It has been explained that it is up to the viewers to decide on which side they want to stand to see the reflections of themselves and the world, and this privilege to choose your own state of presence is a true gift and blessing from God as well as the essence of free will that cannot be taken away by anyone.

작가는 천국이나 지옥은 장소나 공간을 이야기하는 것이 아니라 내면의 상태이자 의식의 차원이며, 자신이 마주한 그 문에 무엇을 비추고, 문을 열고 어디로 나갈지는 지금 이 순간 자신의 의지와 의식의 상태에 달려있다는 것을 작품 '더 게이트'를 통해 표현하고 있다

The artist shows that Heaven and Hell do not refer to a certain location or place, but they are actually one’s inner state of consciousness and a dimension of perceiver’s presence. The question of what to have reflected on the gates and which side of the gates to open depends on the individual’s own will and the present state of consciousness.

한편, '더 게이트'를 포함한 시각견성 시리즈는 트랜스아트의 파트 1에 해당한다. 트랜스아트는 형상과 관념에 구애 받지 않고 본질을 표현한다는 특성이 있는데 그것은 다양한 형태로 형상 너머의 실체를 표현하는 진리의 본질과 다르지 않다고 한다.

Meanwhile, the Optical Awakening series, which includes The Gates, is the first part of Trans-Art. Trans-Art is characterized by artworks that depict and capture the essence of spiritual truth without the constraints of fixed forms and notions. Trans-Art attempts to show that the essence of art is not much different from the essence of the truth in expressing the reality through diverse forms beyond the visible shapes.

작가는 소년시절 전국미술대회 대상 특전으로 미국 유학을 시작해 10대 때 한국과 일본에서 두 차례 초대 개인전을 가진 후 영국 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 정치 경제 철학을 전공했으며 미술과는 다른 외교 경제분야에서 활동하다 은퇴 후 미술로 돌아온 얼굴 없는 작가로 활동하며 트랜스아티스트란 익명으로 지난해 미각과 미술의 결합, 테이스팅 아트 전시회를 개최했고 미각미술 작품집 <<맛으로 견성>>을 출판했다.

The artist comes from a very unique background. He studied in the U.S. at a young age, as the winner of the grand prize at a national art competition, and had two major solo exhibitions in Korea and Japan. Afterwards, he studied Politics, Economics and Philosophy (PPE) at Oxford University in England, and built his successful career in the diplomatic and economic sector. Following his early retirement, he returned to art, and began his activity as a faceless artist. Under the pseudonym, Trans-Artist, he held an astounding exhibition of tasting art, which incorporates art with taste: Tasting-Art exhibition provided once in a life time tasting experience to the audiences to experience a speechless moment of satori. He also published a tasting art book entitled Tasting Awakening last year.
