‘더 게이트’ 작품 통해 신앙과 철학의 본질적 화두 제시

과학과 기술의 혁신으로 현재 인류는 인공지능이 인간의 지성의 총합을 초월하는 특이점을 바라보고 있다. 이러한 특이점은 과학과 기술분야뿐만 아니라 정신적인 분야에서도 해당된다.

 

Mankind is looking toward the singularity where artificial intelligence will surpass the sum of human intelligence as a result of scientific and technological breakthroughs. This singularity applies not only to the field of science and technology, but also to the spiritual sector.

 

 

“진리를 꼭 고행이나 구도와 같은 전통적인 영적 활동을 통해서만 얻을 수 있을까?”라는 의문은 정신과 예술의 결합으로 기존의 관습과 형태를 초월한 새로운 종교문화의 패러다임을 탄생시켰다. 에고와 본성의 분리로 인한 의식차원의 상승을 간접 체험할 수 있는 깨달음과 깨어남의 과정을 시각화한 미술작품 '시각견성'이 그것이다.

 

The question, “Can the spiritual awakening only be obtained through traditional religious activity?” has led to the birth of a new paradigm in religious culture that transcends the conventional religious customs through the convergence of the spiritual and artistic elements. The convergence of Art and Spirituality called ‘Optical Awakening’, is a collection of artworks that visualize the process of awakening and enlightenment. It is an artistic expression of spiritual awakening process and an elevation in the dimension of the consciousness through which indirect experience of spiritual awakening can be possible.

 

 

보고 깨닫는 종교미술인 '시각견성'은 홍익인간 정신과 한얼사상을 계몽주의 철학으로 재정립한 한얼교의 정신문화혁신 프로젝트이다. 영적 미술이지만, 자신의 종교와 상관없이 진리를 감상하고 경험할 수 있는 새로운 방식의 정신문화로 소개되었다.

 

Optical Awakening, a new form of religious art to experience enlightenment, is used as a driving force behind the Spiritual and Cultural Innovation Project of Hanol-gyo (the Korean traditional religion which has re-established the national founding principle of Hanol spirit into the religious philosophy of enlightenment). While it is a form of spiritual art, it has been introduced as a new type of spiritual culture, allowing people to experience Hanol religious philosophy and its teachings on enlightenment without religious obligation.

 

 

말로 표현할 수 없는 것들을 미술로 표현해 감상하는 것으로 사고하는 마음에서 벗어나 직관적으로 깨달음을 접할 수 있는 시각견성은 미술 작품이 직접적인 깨달음의 표현이자 깨어남의 촉매제로 작용한다는 점에서 기존의 종교미술과는 다른 형태의 진화한 영적미술이라고도 볼 수 있다.

 

Optical Awakening, an expression of the inexplicable spirituality, allows people to gain enlightenment intuitively simply by appreciating the artworks, instead of a traditional way of spiritual seeking. It can be considered as an evolved form of spiritual art. Unlike the conventional religious art, the optical awakening artworks are a direct expression of enlightenment and act as a catalyst for awakening.

 

 

시각견성이 의미하는 “견성”이란 마음으로부터 벗어난 본성인 내 '얼'의 단순하고 명료한 의식상태이며, 지적 도약의 시대에 모두가 자연스럽게 맞이하게 될 의식의 진화를 의미한다.

 

According to the artist, the word, “Awakening,” refers to the discovery of true nature. Awakening is not unattainable miraculous state of transformation but simple and clear encounter of one’s “pure consciousness” that has dis-identified from the ego mind, and the evolution of consciousness that everyone is about to experience in the era of intellectual leap.

 

 

Posing a fundamental question on religion and philosophy through The Gates:

The Hell-gate becomes a doorway to Heaven by the Trans-Artist

 

 

누구든지 종교적 편견 없이 쉽고 자연스럽게 미술을 통해 한얼정신의 진리와 철학을 접해볼 수 있는 '시각견성'의 대표작은 어거스트 로댕의 미완 조각 걸작인 ‘지옥의 문’을 재해석하여 천국의 입구로 완성한 조각미술인 '더 게이트'이다.

 

The Gates is a signature artwork from Optical Awakening, where any audience can easily encounter the truth and philosophy of Hanol spirit through the artworks without any religious activity. The “Gates” is based on an inspiration from The Gates of Hell, an incomplete masterpiece by Auguste Rodin.

 

 

더 게이트의 원제인 ‘지옥의 문’은 신의 형벌이자 끝없는 고통을 상징하지만 문의 반대편에서는 지옥에서 벗어날 수 있다면 거기가 바로 천국이며, 지옥의 문이 동시에 천국의 문일수도 있다는 천국과 지옥의 양면성을 재해석해 신앙과 철학에 대한 본질적 화두를 제시한다.

 

The Gates presents a reinterpretation of the duality of the gates of Heaven and Hell. While the Gates of Hell symbolize the endless suffering and punishment from God, if one could escape from hell through that gates, it would be the gates towards Heaven, meaning that the Gates of Hell could be the Gates of Heaven at the same time. As such, it delves into the critical subject of religion and philosophy.

 

 

더 게이트의 작가는 로댕의 미완걸작 지옥의 문을 오랜 시간 성찰하고 묵상한 후 지옥의 문에 표현된 단테의 신곡, 연옥의 조각상들이 아니라 ‘문’ 자체만을 재해석해 지옥의 문인 동시에 자신을 비추는 거울이자, 천국의 입구로 완성하였다.

 

After long contemplation and reflection on The Gates of Hell by Rodin, the artist behind The Gates reinterpreted solely the “gates” of The Gates of Hell, rather than the depictions of the scene from Dante Alighieri's Inferno.

The Trans-Artist’s version of The Gates, is the gates to Hell at the same time a mirror that reflects one’s self. Furthermore, it is the Gates to Nirvana(According to Buddah, the ultimate transcendence and the absolute awakening, which is Nirvana, means simply the end of Dukkha, the end of suffering). The Gates symbolizes the punishment of God and the beginning of indefinite suffering on one side, and it is the Gates to Nirvana, the end of suffering, on the other side. The Gates is a mirror that reflects the perceiver’s outer as well as the inner state of presence.

 

 

작가는 소년시절 전국미술대회 대상 특전으로 미국 유학을 시작해 10대 때 한국과 일본에서 두 차례 초대 개인전을 가진 후 영국 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 정치 경제 철학을 전공했으며 전공과는 달리 외교경제분야에서 활동하다 은퇴 후 다시 미술로 돌아온 특이한 경력의 아티스트다.

 

The artist comes from a very unique background. He studied in the U.S. as a special prize for winning a national art competition at the age of 14. He was widely known as genius painter and held two exhibitions in Korea and Japan in his teens. Afterwards, he studied Politics, Economics and Philosophy at Oxford University in England, and built his impressive career in the diplomatic and economic sector. However, following the early retirement, he returned to his art.

 

 

'트랜스 아티스트'라는 익명으로 활동중인 그는 젊은 시절 경험한 고통스러운 현실과 죽음을 마주했던 절체절명의 순간에 깨달은 바를 자신의 작품에 투영해 지옥의 문이 가진 단순하면서도 심오한 의미와 그 안에 내재된 신성한 진리를 표현했다.

 

Working under the pseudonym, Trans-Artist, the artist projected what he experienced from the suicidal moment, during a critical point in his life when he was faced with an unbearable reality in his younger years, and embodied the most simple yet profound meaning and the divine truth in his own works, conveyed by The Gates of Hell.

 

 

작가는 눈앞에 펼쳐진 모든 것은 자신을 비추는 거울이며 절대로 받아들일 수 없는 현실 앞에서도 절망하고 포기하는 대신 불가피한 삶의 그러함을 자발적 순응으로 온전히 받아들일 때 지옥 같은 현실로 향하는 문은 상처받은 에고를 다 내려놓은 자리에서도 빛나는 자신의 참된 본성을 만날 수 있는 게이트가 된다고 작품을 통해 보여준다.

 

The artist shows that the suchness of life and your perceiving reality is a mirror that reflects you, and it is when you willingly accept the unbearable aspects of life, instead of falling into despair and resentment, that the Gates will show its true face and turn into the Gates through which you can discover your true nature that cannot be distorted by whatever happens in your life. By giving up what made up of ego and leaving it behind the gates, you will be left with the immutable essence, your true nature that cannot be altered by form and phenomena.

 

 

'더 게이트'는 지옥의 면과 그 반대편의 천국의 면으로 이루어져 있는데 지옥의 면은 상처받고 퇴색돼서 손상된 녹슨 거울이 관람객을 비추고, 천국의 면은 맑고 깨끗한 면이 관람객을 비추도록 만들었다. 둘 중 어느 면에 서서 자신과 세상을 비출지는 본인이 결정하는 것이며 그것이 바로 신의 선물이고 은총이며 그 어떤 누구도 빼앗아 갈 수 없는 자유의지의 실체라고 말한다.

 

The Gates face Hell on one side and Heaven on the other. It was made so that a rusty mirror, which has become damaged and discolored, reflects the viewers on the side toward Hell, and a crystal clear mirror reflecting the viewers on the side toward Heaven. It has been explained that it is up to the audiences to decide on which side they want to stand to see the reflections of themselves and the world, and that profound present to choose, is a blessing from God and the essence of free will that cannot be taken away by anyone.

 

 

작가는 천국이나 지옥은 장소나 공간을 이야기하는 것이 아니라 내면의 상태이자 의식의 차원이며, 자신이 마주한 그 문에 무엇을 비추고, 문을 열고 어디로 나갈지는 지금 이 순간 자신의 의지와 의식의 상태에 달려있다는 것을 작품 '더 게이트'를 통해 표현했다.

 

The artist shows that Heaven and Hell do not refer to a certain location or place, but they are actually one’s inner state of consciousness. The question of what to have reflected on the gates and which side of the gates to open depends on the individual’s own will and consciousness.
