Shin Se-won will introduce his fantastic paintings in vivid colors – and his transcendental art world – at the Odakyu Gallery in Tokyo July 22-27.

The debut in Tokyo is his second solo exhibition for the 19-year-old artist. His first solo show was staged in Seoul two years ago.

Shin won many painting awards including the 28th National Painting Competition for Students in 1986.
The win entitled Shin to go to the United States in 1987 to study. He is now attending Georgetown Preparatory School in Washington D.C.

Kyohei Minagami, art critic of Japan, says, “Shin’s expressions vary with motif. His works represent realism based on precise drawings, expressionism or surrealism. He abstracts illustrate his sharp insight into the dispensation of nature or divine providence. With his mystic inspiration and sensitivity to look into human nature, Shin depicts fantasy and mental images in unique Korean colors and in diverse forms.”

The inborn painter, be he young, will captivate the Japanese viewers with his transcendental artworks showing superior mental age, says the art critic.

Korea’s art critic Kim Nam-soo commented: “Realistic touches and mental image art superbly married in his works. In diverse styles, Shin pursues the supreme soul-searching with the variety of primitive and modern, ideal and reality, nobleness and secular world, good and evil, and sharp criticism against absurdities of modern world.

Before going to Tokyo, Shin said, “My emphasis in my Tokyo debut is on my pure art as an expressive form. Expressed in my paintings are the experience I got from traveling, memories of hard times, my days of studying abroad, the subtle sensibility in my teens, and my perception of the world which can only be perceived by me.
